Charity in Ramadan – Part of Iman or Just a Social Obligation!

Charity in Ramadan - Part of Iman or Just a Social Obligation

Charity is to give, to give for the cause of spreading good and betterment of others. Allah SWT is the most Generous and Giving of all, therefore Allah likes these traits in Muslims to have. Allah’s Generosity multiplies in Ramadan, so are the rewards for charity in the month of Ramadan. Charity in Ramadan is considered best as compared to all year round.

The Prophet (saws) said,
“The best charity is that given in Ramadan.” [At-Tirmidhi].

Charity completes the iman of a Muslim. A part of one’s wealth is paid by Muslims around the world in the form of Zakat(fifth pillar of Islam) and Sadaqah. Giving to others from your wealth, purifies the soul and assure rewards from Allah SWT in this life and hereafter.

Narrated `Umar bin Al-Khattab raḍyAllāhu ‘anhu (may Allāh be pleased with him):

Messenger ṣallallāhu ‘alayhi wa sallam (peace and blessings of Allāh be upon him) said, “The (reward of) deeds, depend on the intentions and every person will get the reward according to what he has intended. So whoever emigrated for the sake of Allah subḥānahu wa ta’āla (glorified and exalted be He) and His Apostle ṣallallāhu ‘alayhi wa sallam (peace and blessings of Allāh be upon him), then his emigration will be considered to be for Allah subḥānahu wa ta’āla (glorified and exalted be He) and His Apostle ṣallallāhu ‘alayhi wa sallam (peace and blessings of Allāh be upon him), and whoever emigrated for the sake of worldly gain or for a woman to marry, then his emigration will be considered to be for what he emigrated for.” [Sahih Bukhari]

It is clearly mentioned that the Charity (either Zakat or Sadaqah) you do, must be for the sake of Allah SWT only, and not for the sake of this world. But sadly, now a days this trend is on rise to announce your Charity to the world.

Charity in Ramadan - Part of Iman or Just a Social Obligation

Every other day, people share about their good deeds on social media websites, video links, you tube etc,. They do this on purpose to make a standing in society. Sadaqah now a days has become more of a social obligation. This trend is emerging fast in our Pakistani society. And all thanks to media and meaningless transmissions.

In Pakistan, there are number of organisations that work for the betterment of society on a massive level. They take your donations and charities to meet immediate needs of less privileged. Individuals give their sadaqah to them to be divided to the less fortunate people of our society. You go and pay a certain amount with the intention that you are doing this for the sake of Allah. You do not disclose this to anyone after that.

Then there are people who are collecting goods or groceries, taking pictures and posting on social media saying “Alhamdulillah groceries provided to 10 families this Ramadan”. Why are you announcing it loud?? Shouldn’t this stay between you and your Allah?

Along with charities, distribution of food also increases during the holy month of Ramadan at suhoor and iftar times. People also post pictures of those to show that they have fed 30, 40, 60 or whatsoever number of people.

This taking a lead over one another is actually killing all the good deeds of a person. Your good deeds and intentions should remain between you and your Allah. Please do not advertise these on social media or in neighborhood. This may give you the desired status in society but not hereafter. It is encouraged to do charitable deeds in secret.

Companions of Prophet Muhammad (ṣallallāhu ‘alayhi wa sallam) used to do these charitable works mostly at night times, so less people would know.

The left hand shouldn’t know what the right is doing, the wisdom in this advice is also to encourage people to do acts of goodness in discretion. Although charity can be done in both ways by giving it publicly or in secret, but the latter brings more rewards.

There is no harm in spreading goodness, but putting others down and displaying all your acts of kindness just to gain a reputation in your society is of no good to anyone. Why to waste the beautiful acts then?

In matters of Goodness, never expect any Compliment or Appreciation, just do your Goodness and Disappear.

So start giving in whichever way you can, make the most of this month and deepen your relationship with Allah SWT instead of this world and society.  Work towards your spiritual upliftment, keep on contributing for the sake of mankind anonymously.

I completely agree! Our society has made it more of a social standing diverting it away from the core cause that is to please Allah SWT.
